Take Some Care with Your Appearance
Even if you’re not normally a classy dresser, it’s not a bad idea to carefully consider your appearance before the first date. Keep the location of the date in mind when you’re browsing your options. If you’ve decided to meet at an upscale club or expensive restaurant, the dress code is obviously going to be high standard. If you’re headed out to a movie or for drinks at a little corner pub, you can afford to be a little more relaxed.
You don’t need to rush out and buy a tux to dress up. You can rent or buy a sport jacket, which goes just as well with dark jeans as it does with dress pants. Add a little color with the shirt and you can present a clean, casual, confident image. If your date is a little more low-key, this doesn’t mean you can show up in ratty torn jeans and your favourite heavy metal band T-shirt. Go for stylish casual – leather jacket (not the kind that gangs wear) and jeans that fit.
Grooming is also important. If you’re sporting a full bushman beard that’s gone wild, it might be time to consider a trim. The same goes for a neckbeard – sorry to tell you guys this, but women really don’t find them that sexy. If you look good with scruff, leave it be, but don’t be too scruffy.
Be Respectful and Polite
If your first thought when you see her is that she’s gorgeous, tell her so. Compliment what she’s wearing. Do your best to be a gentleman; you don’t need to offer your arm and escort her around, but it’s a good idea to inquire how she’s doing, how the drive was, and how work has been. Let her know that you’re genuinely interested in what she has to say.
This respect applies to the end of the date, as well. Which is to say that if she politely declines coming back to your place after, let it go. A first date does not instantly mean sex. Assuming that it does is arrogant. A better idea is to not mention it at all – if she wants it, she’ll ask. If not, express that you had a great time and you’d like to see her again. If you’ve behaved well, chances are she’ll want to see you again too.
